A school library media specialist in one of the top ten states has a fairly good chance of knowing someone who has gone through the certification process, or one who can be a partner to go through it together. A school library media specialist in one of the four states in which there are no NBCTs will have to go through it alone. This makes a difference. In fall 2002 the American Association of School Librarians attempted to mitigate that difference by hosting a forum on NBPTS certification. Each state affiliate was asked to send a team of one school library media representative from higher education, one affiliate leader, and one building-level library media specialist to the forum.

The fact that there are four standards in this area emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning for the school library media NBCT. Standards seven to ten are the following: Standard Seven: Reflective Practice Standard Eight: Professional Growth Standard Nine: Ethics, Equity, and Diversity Standard Ten: Leadership, Advocacy, and Community Partnerships 40 The ECYA /Library Media Standards Standard Seven: Reflective Practice This standard has two elements. The first calls for self-reflection: a constant searching for ways to improve personal skills, create increasingly innovative strategies for teaching, and become adept at an ever-widening river of technology.

The standards focus on the teaching act embedded within all areas of school library media best practice. The library media standards, portfolio entries, and assessment center 26 NBPTS and School Library Media exercises focus on the teaching act with students between the ages of 3 and 18 or older.
